Anai [ah NAHEE]. She is so pretty and lives in such an ugly world. |
She is one of 5 kids in a family in Santa Maria. Her dad works, but he is often sick. (Her mom is Juana; her dad, Jorge.) |
Liseth, Martha's youngest, my bud and guide around the colonias. She has learned to read really well this year. Whenever I ask for someone to read the Bible aloud in the studies, Liseth does it with alacrity. |
Sara, Martha's second from the youngest, usually rides shotgun with me when we're loaded for the Bible studies. |

Girls in the orphanage in Rio Bravo. One, age 12, has a baby. |

At Rio Bravo still, Jorge, Antonia, & daughter Yasmine. I was there to pray & play guitar. Antonia has tumors & hasn't been feeling well. |

Again, Jorge, Antonia, & daughter Yasmine. |

Angelica and Joel in their kitchen/bedroom. Angelica is now alone. Joel left her and their 3 kids with no food, no money, and no prospect of getting any. |
Joel and I bought the materials for a new roof for them. |
Marco, a neighbor's boy, would share his meal with me. |
Esperanza made some "mild" [HA!] salsa for me, and in spite of warnings from Jeanne that sometime it's going to kill me, I lunched with them. The outdoor kitchen is better than the indoor. |
Angelica and Esperanza, her neighbor (grinding up the salsa with a pestle) told me that with the recent rains the water became waist deep in places and all their mattresses and blankets were soaked. |

Marilyn sweeps before classes. |

Cristy and Marilyn [l to r]. |
I couldn't believe how much time they spent preparing for the next day, the next week. |
Christy, Jovito - Marilyn's husband - and their 2 girls, and Marilyn. The girls are perpetual motion machines. Jovito helps with the teaching. I was particularly touched by their closeness to each other. Pray - Marilyn is fighting cancer. |
The girls spent 2 hours [!!!!] preparing for a photo shoot, only to have my camera batteries to quit after 3 shots. |

Cristy, Ruth, and Marilyn [l to r]. |

Jack, my colonia work buddy, contemplates building a new house for a grandma. |
Josephina and 5 of her 7 live in 2 rooms. The kids can't go to school; the older ones work at the dump. |
Laura, a lady in the church, gets a new house: before photo of her old house |

Laura, a lady in the church, gets a new house: the new house is kept neat as a pin |
I buy a truckload of day old bread for $10. Three hundred loaves go a long way in the colonias. |

Cristina, diagnosed w/ cancer, and Panchito, her down-syndrome son. She has a new roof on her shack, thanks to Daryl and Vicky Thomas in Mo. |
