A Log of Happenings and Thoughts

19-Nov-2006

These pictures are of the Bible study and prayer group for yesterday, the 18th of November. I always have my guitar and the Mexicans love to sing; but, with some notable exceptions, their singing sounds really bad - normally way off key, changing keys, and out of tune. Jeanne and I speculate that this comes from their not growing up hearing music all the time as most of us in the US do. I tried giving a choral music lesson once; but having no training myself, and having so little success on my try, I have decided to concentrate on lots of singing in hopes that it will get better. Meanwhile we are making a joyful NOISE to the Lord.

And these pictures, also from yesterday, are all of Margarita and the new house we had built for her and her 4 kids. It rained for more than 2 weeks straight in October and her old shack was perpetually flooded. Today I was teasing her because a couple of weeks ago when Jack and I surveyed the lot for the new house, Margarita cried all the time. Today she was all smiles and praising God, though when Martha, her kids, and I prayed for her before we left, she did cry a little bit again.

Marylou with the breadSaturday afternoon is for Bible study, and this Saturday Marylou, a neighbor and a good sister in the Lord, wanted to go with me because some of her friends up north had sent money for the poor people in Matamoros. I decided to take a rack of day-old bread, too, as I have been doing all this summer.

First thing, we were turned back at the border--at the Los Indios Bridge, no less, where the day before I had taken another pickup load and had gotten a green light. So we had to turn around, pay our way out of Mexico, and drive to another bridge, some 15 miles down the Rio Grande. We got a green light there.

The photos tell the story of the bread deliveries. We also delivered the gifts that Marylou carried, a bag of clothes to give out, and the little cabinet that Jeanne sent to Martha, our contact point and go-to girl in the colonias. Bible study, Santa Maria Then we did a Bible study at Jack and Soledad's place in Colonia Santa Maria as we always do on Saturday afternoons. It was a good study time, even though we were an hour late because of having to drive to the other bridge and because of the deliveries that we made first in Colonia Nueva Jerusalem [where most of the bread pictures were taken.]

We drove around giving away the rest of the bread after the study, & I didn't make it home to Jeanne's cookin' until after 7:00. A beautiful day!

Big prayer need: until this week I hadn't been stopped from taking bread over except 1 time. I was stopped 3 times this week, on 2 different bridges; and one official threatened to fine me if I tried to come through with bread any more. I'm a little gunshy now, having no money for the Mexican government. Please pray with us that I shall be able soon to take bread across as before. It is for desperate people, who greatly appreciate having food, let alone having a little bit of variety in diet.

Pray for us, please.
